“It’s no coincidence that this Milwaukee band is called after the New Orleans drummer. Led by mid-west drummer John Carr and fronted by the personable vocalist Kelli Gonzalez, their style is big, swinging, and rocking. The repertoire is largely from the golden era of Crescent City R’n’B, including material from Smiley Lewis, Eddie Bo, Larry Darnell, Sugarboy Crawford, Jessie Hill and Tommy Ridgeley. These are all fine performances, with horns blaring and riffing, rolling piano and the rhythm section spot-on. The originals fit in well, and additional tracks come from Big Maybelle (‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’ – it’s definitely from Maybelle), Ruth Brown, Wynona Carr, and The “5” Royales. Yes, these guys do know their stuff and how to play and sing it. Top notch revivalists – really nice!”
